Constance Bennett (Constance Bennett)

Constance Bennett

Stage and Screen Actress. She was the daughter of silent film idol Richard Bennett, and the sister of actress Joan Bennett. She was born in New York City. Her movie career was launched by Samuel Goldwyn in 1924 in the silent film Cytherea. This would the the first of more than 50 films in which she would appear. She played opposite many of Hollywood’s top leading men including Clark Gable, Frederick March, Joel McCrea, Herbert Marshall, and Cary Grant. With Grant she made two of her biggest films, Topper and Topper Takes A Trip. Her final movie was Madame X. Her private life was almost as entertaining as her movies roles. At 15, she eloped with a University of Virginia student whom she had met over an Easter weekend. Not surprisingly the marriage ended in divorce. When she was 19, she married millionaire Philip Plant. This marriage too ended in divorce. She once again married, at 26, the Marquis Henri de la Falaise. Falaise had previously been married to actress Gloria Swanson. Sadly like the previous two marriages, it ended in divorce. At 36 she married her fourth husband, actor Gilbert Roland. This union didn’t last either. In 1946, she married Air Force Colonel John Coulter. An advisor for Air Force training films, he had met her in Hollywood. It is of interest, that the role of the military wife seemed to have agreed with her, as she remained married to Coulter longer than any of her previous marriages. Being an actress was not her only facet. She was also known as a shrewd businesswoman, creating her own cosmetics and designing originals for a Cincinnati, Ohio, dressmaker. When she died in New York City, she exercised her right to be interred in Arlington with her husband, who had attained the rank of Brigadier General before his death. It should be noted that the black marble stone which marks their grave, makes no mention that she once was a glamorous movie queen, or for that fact, anything of her film career. It simply states: Constance Bennett Coulter.
