Professional Boxer. Born in Lexington, Kentucky, he grew up in Springfield, Ohio and was known as the ‘Springfield Rifle”. He made his professional fight debut at age 19 wining a bout against Willie Reece in the 6th round on May 11, 1953. From that point on, he went on a wining streak until he won the World Featherweight Championship from Hogan “Kid” Bassey on March 18, 1959 and successfully defended his title five times. In a national television championship boxing match at Los Angeles, with Sugar Ramos on March 21, 1963, he suffered head injuries and died two days later at age 29. He ended his career with a record of 59 wins, 7 losses, 1 draw and 1 no contest, with 30 wins by knockout. He also is the subject of musician Bob Dylan’s song “Who Killed Davey Moore?”
